New York 2011

Not in New York for Fashion Week but I figured with New York Fashion Week upon us, I’d share some New York photos (because who gets tired of New York photos? Not I!).

I’ve been struggling to produce newer material but the rain just hasn’t given up yet here. It’s supposed to clear up in our area tomorrow BUT every place I would want to go to won’t be clear so we’ll see. Hopefully you guys had a pleasant weekend! Charles and I spent it mostly watching movies and catching up with shows thanks to the rain. We WERE going to cook a dish but he’s sick and I just got sick (AGAIN) over the weekend. I was just sick last month but my immune system has been compromised with the stress of life and what not haha. But anyway, I’m definitely looking forward to me and Charles’ 13th year anniversary trip. It is going to be much needed since we plan on going to a place that requires us to do nothing and nothing only haha. Can you guess where? It’s definitely not New York or Tokyo!

Wander Hour - Hurricane

Hurricane

It’s been raining cats and dogs the last few weeks so going out for photos wasn’t (and still isn’t) ideal. Okay I lied, it hasn’t been raining every single day but it’s been raining a lot more than I’m used to. Which means that I can spend some time editing photos!

Ever since I was in Seattle and had a stopover in Maui, my iPhone has been going on and off with Emergency Alerts of flash flood warnings in my area. Yea I know, and today was no exception. Videos of floodings in town shows how intense the rain was today! Luckily, I live on the drier part of the island so the rain did not affect me as bad as others. It did rain but it also meant I got to see a pretty sunset!

But anyway, every week, there’s a new hurricane to update myself with. Which means getting dressed is a pain in the butt. I mean, boots, jeans, and a parka when it’s 80 degrees outside? Not happening. What’s also not happening is me getting wet. So, I’ve been conflicted the last few days. So I’ve been wearing the above mentioned outfit sans the parka. It’s been working out okay.

I’ve been enjoying this whole September and the fall fashion that comes with it. Although I can not fully embrace it as my way-up-there Northern Hemisphere friends, I’m definitely embracing the 70s trend. Like hard. So expect some 70s inspired things on here as well as on Instagram. I completely went off tangent but I digress. Here’s an Instagram update!

  • Pretty leis at the lei stand in the Honolulu International Airport. Pretty aren’t they?
  • Lanikai Beach: still one of my favorite beaches on the island despite it’s growing popularity.
  • Sunset photo as seen from the dining table. Not the most recent sunset but a sunset I have yet to share any where.
  • Chasing the sunset from this recent post.
  • I’m pretty good at remembering where I take certain photos at but I don’t quite remember where this was taken.
  • Waimanalo is another favorite beach of mine. The color of the water is crazy insane!
  • Sunset photo also from my recent post.
  • Because that wall is just so good.
  • New York dreaming. I’ll see you in a few months!

My work always coincides with my mood. Lately, my Instagram has been emitting some sort of cooler tone. Lots of blues, whites, blacks, and a sprinkle of yellow and warm tones here and there. I’m really enjoying it and I hope you guys are too! Happy Friday and don’t forget to follow me on Instagram if you haven’t already!

Wander Hour - Monday Blues

Monday Blues

Photos are completely irrelevant to the title but I am feeling completely under the weather this Monday. I have been sick all weekend and it peaked today. Yikes! Wanted to do a post to inform you all that I may/may not post  this week. Trying to recover 100% before next week! Hope you guys had a much more lovely weekend than I did!

In the meantime, the following photos are photos that I took with the xD card but I still haven’t accessed them! Haha! Have a great week!

Pink

To continue on with last week’s Orange post, this week, I dug through my archives and found more photos. This time around, instead of orange, I seem to be gravitating towards pink-ish photos. Quite odd since my taste in everything (from style to home decor) usually revolves around neutral colors. Maybe summer is making me see things in a different palette. Who knows?

Peonies

Wander Hour - Peonies

Oh peonies, when will I ever quit my love for you. Probably never. This was taken in 2013. With the season about the end, I remembered buying two bouquets instead of one. Does anyone else miss peony season?

Somewhere Above New York

Wander Hour - New York

This photo was taken somewhere in New York from maybe two years ago. Virgin America sure knows how to set the mood but because I was using a 50mm lens when I took this photo, I couldn’t fit whatever I envisioned into the photo. You can see a bit of purple on the corners from the lighting inside the aircraft!

I remember this day as if it were yesterday but I can’t believe this set of photos was taken four years ago! I remember taking my mother to this scenic lookout during a summer sunset with Curry. It was her first time there and she was in complete awe. I try to take her to places but she despises traffic and long drives. Nowadays, since I live on a tiny island, driving isn’t too bad for her so I try to take her to new places every time she visits.

Kwanzan Cherry Tree

Kwanzan Cherry Trees is a type of cherry blossom tree. Their blossoms are different from the ones I typically see because of how full and frilly the petals are. Aren’t they the prettiest though? This was taken at the The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens; probably one of my favorite places to visit in California when I was living there. Although I haven’t been back since I moved to Hawaii, I’m definitely going to want to visit the next time I’m back there!

Orchids

My affinity for flowers came from my home in California and being surrounded by them. Both my parents and my grandmother grew flowers in the front and backyard. These orchids are the ones my parents grew. It was always a treat to photograph them whenever they bloomed.

Hope you guys enjoyed my photos for the week! Apologies for not posting on Wednesday. I was without internet for a whole day and could not post. Yesterday, my roommate’s guest flew in which means this weekend is going to be full of adventures around the island. That means, more photos on the blog! What do you have plan for the weekend? See you all on Monday!

Refinery Hotel

Refinery Hotel

63 West 38th St

New York, NY 10018

I’ve been dreaming of New York lately. More so, dreaming of New York in the autumn which is my favorite time to visit. The air is crisp, layering is an option, and the leaves begin to turn colors. It usually happens around this time when I dream of autumn in New York. And so because of my desire to visit New York has been lingering on my mind lately, I decided to revisit New York with a post. Okay, okay, in actuality, this post was sitting on my draft’s page so I figured now was a great time to post it.

Refinery Hotel was the hotel Charles and I stayed at for our 12th year anniversary last January. As we were looking for hotels, I remembered he had points from Expedia to use towards a hotel room. After some research, we ended up staying at the Refinery Hotel for $32 for two nights! I mean, of course, with some patient and consistency (we always book with Expedia so we have accumulated points through the years from their Expedia+ rewards program), we were able to get it for such a low price but seriously, if you need any travel tips check out this post I did last year: The Economics of Traveling.

Anyway, Refinery Hotel was as good as all the best hotels that I’ve stayed at. Having been to New York numerous times and staying about 10 different hotels from various prices (one where I feared for bed bugs in the wee hours in the morning), I think I have an idea of what’s good and what’s bad. Refinery Hotel? Definitely in the good scale (and way up there too). Conveniently located near Bryant Park, we enjoyed our short stay while we were there and we are looking forward to our next stay!

The front desk was lovely and no complaints on the customer service side of their business. We ended up with a room with a beautiful view.

Wander Hour - Refinery Hotel

See? Beautiful view. A great view from our room not only existed in our room itself but the bathroom as well. I know, some find it a bit too much but I found it to be intimate despite having a window in the bathroom. I don’t know, I’m an oddball.

The bed was comfortable and I loved the decor and masculine color scheme. I’ve always been a fan of simplicity and darker tones so I was sold on Refinery Hotel.

Since Charles and I were there for a short trip, we didn’t get to explore the hotel as much as wanted to. I know they have a rooftop bar that I wished we had went to (I know, I usually never skip out of a rooftop bar!). But I guess that just gives us another opportunity to make a trip back out there (autumn preferably).

What’s your favorite hotel in New York City?
